HOPS (Humulus lupulus - cannabaceae) - Records regarding hops go back to the 8th century, it was cultivated in monasteries for beer making. Non-pollinated female cones are used which is why some male plants in the vicinity are destroyed. Young new shoots are edible in a similar way to asparagus, being high in B vitamins and minerals they were a gourmet delight in the time of Pliny the Elder a roman naturalist. The hop is an ancient medicinal plant with sedative and diuretic properties and an ability to increase appetite.

Hops are generally safe to consume and a tea is a great place to start with experiencing the effects of this medicinal plant.

Hops can help with sleep, anxiety, low appetite, menopausal issues (as they contain a Estrogen like substance), inflammation and have anti-oxidant properties.

To make tea take - 1tsp of hop flowers - 1 cup of boiled water let sit for 15 minutes with a lid on (to conserve essential oils)
